The European Union initiated the process of reforming research assessment in 2021. The Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA) - a global network of universities, research institutions and research funding organisations - has emerged from this process. Its aim is to initiate a cultural change along with development and establishment of new principles in research assessment.
TU Braunschweig defines itself as a cosmopolitan research university that wants to attract scientists and scholars from all nations. Actively approaching talented researchers with the aim of attracting them to spend a longer or shorter research period at TU Braunschweig is a central component of the university's overall strategy and is regarded as an important cross-sectional task.
The new program “Lower Saxony - Scotland Research and Innovation Scheme” intensifies the long-term academic cooperation between Lower Saxony and Scotland. It offers structured funding opportunities for cross-border research and innovation and is intended to promote joint interdisciplinary projects. The scheme is divided into two pathways to support both emerging and established collaborations. Both are open to researchers from all academic disciplines to ensure broad participation and promote interdisciplinary approaches.
Applications for new collaborations are due by April 09 and for existing collaborations by June 30.
The CoARA Working Group on Reforming Academic Career Assessment (WG ACA), of which TU Braunschweig is a member, has published its first outputs, now available on Zenodo: Lessons learned, Survey results, Case studies.
The WG has conducted an extensive survey of nearly 200 academic organizations across Europe and beyond, investigating their hopes and ambitions for reforming academic career assessment. In collaboration with eleven leading initiatives, they also gathered best practices and valuable insights on this critical topic. From the collected data, six key lessons have emerged to guide comprehensive reforms in academic career assessment, reflecting contributions from various institutions, including ours. The lessons learned clearly show that change is a foot. Some lessons are confirmations of common expectations; others highlight important challenges that have yet to be resolved. In either case, they underscore the importance of practical, adaptable tools tailored to the diverse needs of institutions. By connecting each lesson to specific case studies and actionable insights, they create a roadmap for improving evaluation systems.
